Stavropol Сity state archive was founded in January 1946 in accordance with the Decision of National Commissioners Council of the USSR from 19 January 1946 № 8-203.
Since 02.10.1987 Stavropol city state archive was renamed in accordance with the Stavropol City Council of People's Deputies into an archival department of Executive Committee of Stavropol city People's Deputies Council.
According to the Decree of the Russian President from the 22 of August 1991 № 75 “About activity of executive power in the Russian Federation" to perform functions in the field of archive affairs and to provide activity of representative bodies and executive power of municipal education, and also of information service of establishments, organizations, enterprises and citizens in accordance with “the Decision of the Head of Stavropol City Administration from the 24 of January 1992 № 71 "About management structure of Stavropol City national economy " the archive department of Stavropol City Administration was created.
